Could they still be a kind of aphid? The one time I was managing to have plants grow and those ugly little pale brownish colony needed to show up and kill them all. They had COVERED all the soil and they were so small that from afar I could never tell that the layer on the top wasn’t soil but a massive population of those destroyers that had swarmed the pots. I had to look closely to see that all of them were moving, diving inside the soil and moving about fast to see that that wasn’t soil! I tried using 1/9 thinned out clorax based on the opinions of a relative who was plant saavy and that did help but not entirely, so I increased the 1/9 of clorax to about 2/5 clorax and it was then when all my plants died. Before that some of them were barely surviving and most of them were already dead because of those insects.

While I am all organic my outdoor garden, the only solution I have found for scale on houseplants is a systemic insecticide because surface insecticides do not enter through their tough shell. I use idimacloprid because you don’t have to mix up or be exposed to anything. Bonide has it in the form of crystals that you water in. Scale can spread to many susceptible plants, so get a cheap magnifying glass and take a good look under a strong light.

I have been using the firm hose, alcohol swab, and then neem oil spray method which keeps them decreased but never gone. I have to stay so vigilant. I hesitate giving my plants to friends, I would hate to set them up for an infestation!
