The scope of the waste is mind boggling!

From a personal standpoint, we have a small under-the-counter fridge with pull out drawers for all our refrigeration needs. I believe the size of most refrigerators is the principal cause for much of the waste. I go shopping every 7-10 days and only go when no fresh produce is left.

A detailed shopping list not only helps avoid wastage, but also saves time and money.

Experiment on self by trying to sleep without dinner Essentially, it requires a change in the attitude of the people who have plenty to eat, and waste. I recall reading that there more obese than malnourished people in the World. Food is consumed for its taste and pleasure and not for the essential nutrition. Increased awareness for food wastage should be the top priority.

I am 72 years old and have been composting food waste for years. And my husband and I have developed some refrigerator habits that result in minimal waste: eat the most fragile fresh produce first (asparagus) and wash and keep leafy produce in “lettuce spinners” so it is always attractive and ready to eat; ignore “best by” dates; keep the frig virtually empty so nothing gets lost and forgotten in the far back, “eat it or freeze it” until it is gone (so leftovers don’t accumulate or get distastefully old). Store small amounts of leftovers in microwaveable clear glass containers so they are easily seen and rewarmed at mealtimes.

Then found and read the food waste article. I was disappointed to not see any reference to “Just Eat It”, a documentary movie made in Vancouver BC about food waste. This has much of the info in your article and is beautifully made.
